Environmental Partners is assisting the Town of Kingston with the mapping of its drainage system onto a Town-wide GIS map. The project was funded through the Massachusetts State Revolving Fund (SRF) Program. The work includes mapping storm drain outlets throughout the Town and compiling the information into a user-friendly GIS datalayer and map that conforms to MassGIS standards.
The mapping approach consisted of reviewing all of the Town’s existing mapping related to stormwater systems and structures, and comparing that to the GIS mapping data acquired from the detailed aerial survey. All outfall structures that could be located were inspected and sampled for basic water quality parameters and connectivity with the larger system. A comprehensive stormwater map was then prepared that combined the aerial data with the existing mapping data. Connectivity was established based on record drawings of the storm drain system, supplemented with field investigations.
The work included:
With the more accurate base map information in hand, we have proceeded to collect database information and electronic imagery at all drainage structure locations. The database will be linked to the GIS attributes.
