Barnstable Village Improvements

Bricklayers work on a sidewalk in front of a historic building.

Construction of the Barnstable Village Project along Main Street (Route 6A) and Millway, which provides safety and operational improvements in downtown Barnstable, was completed in the spring of 2021. EP provided public outreach, design and construction administration services for the Town of Barnstable on this exciting project in historic Barnstable Village with construction beginning in September 2019.

Work on this project extended along Main Street from Rendezvous Avenue to Millway and along Millway from Main Street to the Harbor. Excessive travel speeds along Main Street were addressed with traffic calming devices that in turn, served to address sight distance issues while minimizing impacts to abutting properties and retaining the village setting aesthetic. Treatments include raised crosswalks, texturized pavement treatments, and gateway treatments. Within the downtown portion of Main Street, curb extensions were also designed to reduce travel speeds and improve the safety of crossing pedestrians. The project also provided much needed ADA-compliant pedestrian accommodations throughout both corridors that addressed safety concerns and encourage pedestrians to explore Barnstable Village, as well as traffic signal upgrades at the Main Street/Millway intersection. Streetscape enhancements and ornamental street lighting was strategically designed to reflect the historic charm of this village.
